2008 Award Winners
The Employee Involvement Association annually recognizes the best ideas submitted from employees of its organizational members. This year, more than 100 ideas were submitted from around the world for consideration.
An independent panel of judges reviews each idea to measure against the criteria of economic impact, increased productivity and ingenuity. This year’s award winners are to be congratulated for being the best.
Leading the pack of honorees is the Overall Idea of the Year Winner and Individual Idea of the Year Award Winner: Redirect the culvert outfall away from the water intake submitted by Altaf Hussain of Dubai Aluminium Company, Ltd.. During the 1st Gulf War, a breakwater was built to protect the Desalination Plant water intake from potential oil slick/spill. Afterwards, the water intake temperature was higher. This increased temperature had a significant impact on water production and power generation. The $1.82M savings from the implementation of Hussain’s idea reoccurs each year.
The Team Idea of the Year Award went to a group at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control – Dallas for the idea Bulkhead Planning Reduction. The idea combined the planning for two separate pieces for the machined part and assembly, which resulted in total savings of $728,000 in one year.
The Green Idea of the Year Award was earned by Lockheed Martin MFC for the idea submitted by Vanessa Triska: Waste Reduction at Building 10. This idea incorporated a Green Engineering process to deconstruct and recycle as much material from Building 10 as possible. Implementation resulted in reduced project costs by 28% and saved $322,000 in the first year.
The Best Program Administrator Award was received by Ali Bin Rahal of Dubai Aluminium Company, Ltd.. It was Ali’s idea to give his area employees a chance to explain their suggestions in the Suggestion Scheme Review Team, where suggestions are discussed and rewarded. This innovative idea resulted in enhancing the employee involvement in his own area as well as in other areas. Ali’s involvement was so effective that in 2002 Potroom Maintenance achieved 100%employee participation for the first time.

The Employee Involvement Association serves professional managers and administrators of employee involvement and suggestion programs and has been in operation for 65 years. It is estimated that its member organizations receive more than 250,000 suggestions per year.
